NAPTIP ARREST COUPLE, ONE OTHER FOR ABUSE OF MINOR & HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN ABIA
REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has arrested three peorsons in Umuahia, Abia State for their alleged involvement in domestic violence, abuse of a minor and human trafficking.
The suspects are Mr. Uzochukwu Madu and his wife, Mrs. Lorita Madu, and Mr. David Chinweuba.
Mr. and Mrs. Madu allegedly abused their house help, 11 year old Glory John on the grounds that she did not inform them that their children’s food had finished.
Glory, who was rescued by a concerned neighbour from her guardians, had reportedly run out of the house naked, and claimed that she was not only beaten, but that Mrs. Madu also poured water mixed with pepper on her body.
In the case of Mr. David Chinweuba, he was allegedly involved in trafficking about 16 girls from the state outside the country.
In an interview, Abia State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Deaconess Rose Urenta, expressed dismay with the development, adding that in line with the state’s zero tolerance policy on gender based violence, it would ensure the victim got justice.
For her part, the State Coordinator of NAPTIP, Mrs. Nkemdilim Okafor, said the agency swung into action as soon as it received the report, and promised that the matter would be handled diligently.
