REPORTER: PAMELA IGWE
Anambra State Government has called on individuals to adopt safe environmental management practices, good sanitation and hygiene culture that will promote the general well-being of the citizens.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Felix Odimegwu, made the call during a news conference to mark the United Nations 2022 World Environment Day in Awka.
The theme for the 2022 event is “Only one earth” focusing on the need to live sustainably in harmony with nature.
World Environment Day, observed since 1972, is celebrated annually on 5th June and is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Felix Odimegwu, explains that Anambra State is facing serious environmental degradation and climate challenges, one of which is deforestation.
According to the Commissioner, deforestation is now a serious offence in the state.
While advising people to partner the government in developing environment safety methods, Mr. Odimegwu encourages them to report quickly any active erosion before it becomes a big gully.
The Commissioner also commends Governor Chukwumma Soludo for declaring war on environment decadence in the state.
The Project Coordinator, Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMA), Mr. Michael Ivenso, says the state government in collaboration with the ministry of environment and works is intervening in other erosion sites to cut down on the number of erosion ravaged sites in the area.
The Managing Director Drainage and Forest Preservation, Mr. Chido Obidiegwe, appeals to individuals to contribute towards making sure that Anambra state has a safe and secure environment.
