ANAMBRA GUBER SUPPLEMENTARY POLL: SECURITY THREATS DELAY DISTRIBUTION OF ELECTION MATERIALS

REPORTER: UCHE NDEKE

Distribution of materials for Tuesday’s supplementary governorship poll in Ihiala is still ongoing at the local government headquarters, Ihiala.

As at noon, there was heavy security presence in all the roads leading to the distribution venue.

Corps members and other ÍNEC officials were also on ground while the materials were being distributed.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the delay was due to some factors, including failure of some ad-hoc staff earlier enlisted to show up and security threats received from five communities in the area.

The five communities, where it was gathered the people said they don’t want any election to take place include, Lilu, Osumogho, Mbosi, Azia, Iseke and Ubuluisiuzor.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Echeng Echeng, said adequate security arrangement had been made for the election in all the communities in Ihiala.

“We have made our deployment, it is very robust and we are confident that we are going to conduct elections in every location that we are supposed to have elections in Ihiala today.

“We are not saying that there is no fear, there is fear everywhere as far as Anambra is concerned but we have had elections in 20 Local Government Areas, this is just one Local Government Area.

“With what we have on ground, including the Police, Army, NSCDC, DSS and others, we are going to handle the situation,” the Police Commissioner assured.

As at the time of filing this report, deployment was still being made to some areas.
