The Wife of the Governor urged government at all levels, public and private sectors, traditional rulers and religious leaders to invest in women in order to accelerate progress. In a remark, the state Commissioner for Women affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, said the day was set aside to honour the achievements of women in various fields. He stressed that the country, and the globe owed them lots of gratitude for their contributions towards global economic, social and political development. On the theme of the celebration, “Inspire Inclusion,” Governor Otti said his government had empowered women. This he said he had done through improved budgetary allocation in the various sectors that had direct implications on the welfare and well-being of the women and the girl child as well as appointment of women to strategic positions in government. The Governor further stated that he had given approval for the state to begin immediate disbursement of funds at zero interest rate to women entrepreneurs among other operators of small and micro enterprises in the rural areas, through the state’s cooperative programme. Governor Otti used the opportunity of the celebration of the International Women’s Day to thank all Abia women, including his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, for their support, and for having faith in him, as their Governor.
