MOTHER CONNIVE WITH DAUGHTER TO SELL HER 2 CHILDREN IN ANAMBRA

REPORTER: UCHE NDEKE

A 38-year-old woman, Chinyere Chukwu, from Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been apprehended for attempting to sell her two sons.

The suspect was said to have connived with her 17-year-old daughter, Joy, to sell off her two sons due to the economic hardship the country.

She was apprehended by the State Government, through the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, who led some security operatives on the operation.

The Commissioner possed as a potential buyer after the Ministry got a tip off on the intention of the suspect.

During interrogation, the suspect, Mrs. Chukwu, who has eleven children, said she decided to sell the two boys at one million naira each when she could no longer cater for all the children.

According to Mrs. Chukwu, after serious bargaining by the commissioner, who posed as the buyer, they decided to sell them at N1.8 million, instead of the initial N2 million.

The suspect said she developed an interest in the business after her neighbour successfully sold one of her kids.

She explained she had only two children for her husband but got the remaining nine children after the husband’s demise and ever since, she had not been able to give them adequate care and support.

Also, her 17-year-old daughter, who is the eldest of the 11 children, explained that the plan was to use the proceeds to advance her tertiary education.

Reacting to the development, the commissioner, Mrs. Obinabo, noted that the remaining children of the suspect would be taken into the state government’s custody for proper care even as she stressed her resolve to apprehend the woman’s neighbour, who had sold off her kid.

The Commissioner warned that anyone found engaging in such act would be handed over to the police and prosecuted.
