HELP US SENSITISE ELECTORATE—INEC BEGS CSOs
REPORTER: CHINAZO ILECHUKWU
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is seeking collaboration with Civil Society Organizations to enhance voter education among the electorate in Imo State.
At a capacity building workshop organized for Voter Education Providers in Owerri, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Professor Sylvia Agu, urged the civil society to talk to the people on the need to participate in the November 11 governorship election.
She expressed worry that many Nigerians were not aware of the workings of INEC and other stakeholders in the conduct of elections, thereby allowing themselves to be misled by mischievous individuals, who peddle false information.
Professor Agu said the participants would be equipped with the requisite knowledge to enable them to educate the prospective voters on the need to avoid selling of votes, proper thumb print to reduce void votes and the need to exercise their franchise.
Earlier, the Administrative Secretary INEC Imo State, Mr. Fidelis Uguru, called on civil society groups to use their positions to correct negative impressions people have about elections and gave an assurance that the commission would deliver credible election in the state.
Some of the participants commended INEC for partnering the civil society in the area of voter education and promised to assist in sensitizing the electorate.
