ANAMBRA FLOOD VICTIMS CRY FOR MORE HELP
REPORTER: OBY ARINZE
Some residents of Onitsha have called on the Anambra State Government, public spirited individuals and organisations to assist victims of the recent flood disaster at the various Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDP) camps around them.
They made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria at an IDP camp located at the Crowther Memorial Primary School Onitsha.
A resident, Mr. Odinakachi Iyioke, was grateful to the Camp Supervisor and other heads for their doggedness in ensuring that the camp was in good condition.
He, however, appealed to the Anambra State Government to improve the living condition and ensure adequate safety of the victims.
Another resident, Mrs. Meg Oputa, frowned at the halls where flood victims were kept, observing that both the ceiling and the floor was all in a sorry state.
Crowther Memorial Primary School Onitsha, is the holding camp for Onitsha North Local Government Area.
When Radio Nigeria visited the camp, Children, youths, men and women were seen in their numbers playing, discussing, cooking while some were sleeping.
During a brief tour of the kitchen section of the Camp at about 11am, some women were seen cooking with big pots but regrettably with a little firewood, which delayed their cooking.
One of the cooks, Mrs. Chibuzo Mmadukasi from Anam, explained that firewood was one of the major problems they encountered, saying that it slowed down the pace of cooking.
At the clinic section, Dr. Anselm Ekwealor complained that shortage of drugs was also a big challenge,
pointing out that frequently used drugs were in short supply like analgesics, antibiotics and drips.
The medical practitioner pointed out that, if there was a serious case, the person would be referred to the General Hospital Onitsha for further treatment.
Dr. Ekwealor commended the state government and some individuals for their efforts and response so far.
For her part, the Camp Supervisor, Dame Theresa Udemezue, commended some individuals and groups that had visited the area so far.
She listed firewood, mattresses, blankets and mosquito nets as well as food stuffs as part of the items they needed urgently in the camp.
