SHUN SOCIAL VICES, UTILIZE SKILLS ACQUISITION PROGRAMME — NYSC DG TELLS CORPS MEMBERS

REPORTER: CHINAZO ILECHUKWU

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it will continue to prioritize skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development programmes to ensure corps members are self-reliant after the service year.

The Director General of the Corps Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim stated this in a message to the commencement of 2022 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Orientation course at the permanent orientation camp, Eziama Obaire in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State.

He noted that their predecessors, who embraced vocational and entrepreneurial training during the service year had become successful in their chosen businesses.

General Ibrahim represented by the Imo State Coordinator of the Scheme, Mrs. Rachel Idaewor, urged the corps members to be disciplined and take camp activities seriously as the corps would not tolerate violation of rules guiding the NYSC.

“The regimented nature of the camp is intended to further instill discipline and build your resilience. You are expected to comply strictly with the set rules and regulations and be obedient to your course officials.

“Let me use this opportunity to caution you against indulgence in cultism, drug abuse and other social vices,” he warned.

The Chief Judge of Imo State, Justice Theresa Chikeka, represented by Justice Innocent Njaka, urged the new corps members to abide by the oath of allegiance, which they took, to achieve the purpose of the scheme.

Some of the corps members, who spoke with journalists, said the programme would afford them the opportunity to interact with people of different ethno-religious background.

They promised to take advantage of the various skill acquisition programmes in the camp to empower themselves.

One thousand, five hundred and ninety-five corps members are participating in the three weeks orientation course.
