A faith-based organization, Citizens for Righteousness and Social Justice, wants the Federal Government to take urgent steps towards reverting the prices of premium motor spirit (PMS) also known as petrol to official pump price to ameliorate the hardship experienced by Nigerians.
Addressing a news conference in Owerri, the Chairman of the body in Imo State, Bishop Kenneth Obi, lamented that the prices of petroleum products have skyrocketed thereby increasing the cost of goods and services.
He pointed out that salary earners and the unemployed were the worst hit by the high cost of petroleum products, noting that people now paid through their nose on transportation.
Bishop Obi said the government had a duty to ensure the welfare of citizens and warned that the organization would embark on a protest if the prices of petroleum products did not return to normal within the next two weeks.
He called on the Federal Government to ensure that those responsible for the importation of unwholesome fuel into the country were sanctioned to forestall future occurrence.
Observation by Radio Nigeria indicates that in Owerri, Imo State capital, premium motor spirit sells between #220:00 and #240:00 per litre as against the normal price of #165:00.
Also, automotive gas oil (AGO) known as diesel sells between #600:00 and #700:00 per litre..
