NSCDC DEPLOYS FEMALE OPERATIVES TO PROTECT SCHOOLS IN ENUGU
REPORTER: CHRISTIAN NWANGENE
In a bid to guarantee safety in schools, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed female Special Rapid Response Squad (RRS) to schools across the 17 Local Government Areas of Enugu State to protect students and teachers from frequent invasions by armed bandits.
Inaugurating the Squad at the Command’s headquarters, Enugu, the Assistant Commandant General, Mr. Felix Oke, expressed confidence in the ability of the personnel to win the war against banditry.
Mr. Oke, explained that the deployment was in line with the Federal Government’s programme of safe school initiative project aimed at providing adequate security in schools, and the NSCDC Commandant General’s efforts aimed at addressing security challenges in schools across the country.
“We want our schools to be safe and the Commandant General of NSCDC decided to use females to build a special corps to be able to take over the schools to keep these schools safe, it’s unfortunate that this kind of a bad thing is happening in Nigeria when all other countries are doing everything to promote education,” he said.
The Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Enugu State Command, Mr. Valentine Afrika Ezenyimulu, said the armed squad had been exposed to three-months intensive training programme and were better equipped to respond to any emergency situations especially in schools.
“It’s a new outfit created by the Commandant General when he took office in March, he created a female squad. The female squad is to provide security for schools, he now gave a directive that every state Command must have a squad, so we have trained our own squad for two months today is their inauguration in Enugu State.
“We took cognizance of their physical fitness, their endurance ability, the use of fire arms also they have psychology on how to approach the public and how to be very civil when they are posted to their area of assignment,” he said.
Highlights of the event were various drill displays by the female corps to demonstrate their readiness to combat any form of insecurity.
