BREAKING: SOLUDO WINS ANAMBRA GUBER ELECTION

REPORTER: NDU NWANNAH

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) the winner of 2021 Anambra State Gubernatorial Election.

The outcome was declared following the collation of Tuesday’s Supplementary Election results in Ihiala Local Government Area.

Declaring the results, the Returning Officer for the election and Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi announced that the APGA candidate, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, got 112,229 votes to emerge victorious.

Professor Obi announced that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr. Val Ozigbo, polled 53,807 votes to come second, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) Candidate, Sen. Andy Uba came third with 43,285 votes.

She expressed appreciation to political parties, stakeholders and security agencies for their support in ensuring the successful execution of the election.

Reacting to the outcome of the election, the APGA Agent, Senator Victor Umeh, said it was keenly contested, noting that the victory of his party was well deserved.

The APC Agent, Mr. Chibuzor Obiakor, alleged that the election was marred by irregularities, stressing that his party would take a decision on the outcome of the polls.

The APC Agent refused to sign the result sheet after the declaration.

Notwithstanding that the total number of registered voters in the Anambra State Governorship Election was 2,466,688, Radio Nigeria gathered that only 253,388 voters were accredited.

The total votes cast stood at 249,631, the total valid votes were 241,523, while the rejected cotes were 8,108.

The gubernatorial election could not be completed on Saturday last week, following the failure to hold the polls in Ihiala Local Government Area due to security threats.

This prompted INEC to fix a Supplementary Election which was conducted on Tuesday this week to complete the process.

Even during the supplementary poll in Ihiala Local Government Area, there were security threats in in six communities: Lilu, Azia, Iseke, Mbosi, Ubuluisiuzor and Orsumoghu.

This led to the late commencement of the poll in the local government area.

However, election was later held in other communities except a unit in Lilu and the entire Orsumoghu, where it was reported that security operatives and suspected gunmen had a gun battle that lasted about three hours.

Meanwhile a total of 18 Political Parties took part in the Anambra governorship election.
