SHOP OWNERS WAIL AS ECTDA DEMOLISH ILLEGAL SHOPS IN ENUGU

Shop owners on the Ogui Road axis of the old artisan market are now counting their loses following demolition of their shops by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA.

The make-shift shops, including containers, kiosks, and canopies were described as illegal as they were built in violation of the Enugu master plan and defaced the city.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the illegal shop owners were earlier notified of the demolition and were asked to vacate the area.

However, the shop owners, who were in tears, though acknowledged that they were served notice to vacate the area, argued the the demolition deadline had not elapsed.

They appealed to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to give the on-going restoration of Enugu Master Plan a human face as people needed time to plan for relocation in this hard times.

The demolition caused heavy traffic in the area as some shop owners and sympathizers were busy packing their goods and removing what was left of their shanties.
