enugu govThe Enugu State Governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has pledged his administration’s commitment towards addressing the challenges confronting inmates of the Nigerian Prisons Enugu. Governor Ugwuanyi made this pledge while marking his fifty-third birthday celebration at the prisons premises in Enugu.

He said he opted to celebrate his day with the inmates to have a first hand knowledge of  their plight which he believed would boost their morale.

Governor Ugwuanyi further stated that the state government had set aside funds to address the congestion of the prisons in the state, adding that some awaiting trial inmates would soon regain their freedom. Earlier, the Comptroller of Enugu Prisons, Mrs Ukwuori Kalu commended the governor for choosing to celebrate his birthday with the inmates in spite of several choice places in the state.

Mrs. Kalu said that the governor by his action had exhibited humane and humble character. The comptroller said that proactive measure was needed to be put in place to checkmate incidences of jailbreak and other violence conducts in the prisons.

The Udi Local Government Transition Committee Chairman, Mr Hyacinth Ngwu congratulated and commended the governor for his humanitarian gestures, which spurred him and his counterparts to visit the less privileged in hospitals and motherless babies homes.

The Prisons visit featured  cultural display by female inmates and a hip-up freedom song by selected male inmates titled ‘We are pleading with the world to give us second chance’.
