Over one thousand farmers in Ikwo Local Government area of Ebonyi State have benefited from fertilizer distribution scheme courtesy ofthe National Coordinator of a Pro-Democracy Group, Initiative for Demonstrating Change, Comrade Chinedu Ogar. At the event in Ikwo, Comrade Ogar pointed out that it was to support the efforts of President MohammaduBuhari’s administration in making Nigeria self-sufficient in food production.
The farmers who converged on Item,Amagu and Ohatekwe village squares where the distribution exercise took place were selected from about twenty political wards in Ikwo Local Government Area.
Some of them were provided with funds to procure more farm inputs in addition to bags of salt distributed to women in attendance. Comrade ChineduOgar stressed that the empowerment was to further take the agricultural agenda of President MohammaduBuhari closer to people at the grassroots.
He called on the farmers to key into various agricultural programmes of the Federal Government that had been stepped down in the state to diversify the nation’s economy. A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in the Local Government Area, Mr. Friday Akochi explained that with the timely distribution of the fertilizer, farmers in the area would be expected to record high yield of rice and other farm produce.
Some of the benefiting farmers including Mr. Jimmy Igwe and Chief EveristusAjabu appreciated Comrade Ogar for his kind gesture and called on the government to step down its agricultural programmes to address some of the challenges facing them. They also appealed to the government to provide them with irrigation facilities to enable them to cultivate rice all year round.
