ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY, CONCERNED CITIZENS ADVOCATE SPECIAL ALLOWANCES FOR TEACHERS

teacher4World Teachers’ Day celebrated annually on fifth October was first marked in 1994 when the signing of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO recommendation concerning the status of Teachers was commemorated.

The Day aims at celebrating the Twentieth Anniversary of the 1997 UNSCO Recommendation concerning the status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel.

On the essence of the celebration, a cross section of Parents in Enugu Metropolis says adequate remuneration, provision of teaching aids and elongation of retirement age of teachers from sixty to sixty-five years would not only enhance teaching in the nation but also make for increased productivity.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers”, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Enugu State Wing, Comrade Paul Nnaji commended the State Government for ensuring industrial harmony in the area through regular payment of salaries. Comrade Nnaji appealed to Government to prioritize the welfare of Teachers under its employ for the benefit of the future generation.

Activities like workshops, awards, match past and symposium to mark this year’s Teachers’ Day are expected globally to showcase the relevance of Teachers in education development.
