INSTITUTIONS YET TO REMIT THEIR TAXES TO ENUGU STATE GOVERNMENT TO BE SANCTIONED
The Enugu State House of Assembly has threatened to sanction federal and financial institutions that have refused to remit taxes to the state coffers.
The House Committee Chairman on Finance and Appropriation, Chief Chuka Eneh, issued the threat when he led members of the committee on oversight visit to the State Internal Revenue Services. The committee on arrival was presented with volume of debt owed by various institutions in the state amounting to billions of naira.
The Chairman of the Committee, Mr. ChukaEneh representing Udi South expressed worry with the development but assured that the house would use all reasonable force to compel the defaulters to pay their taxes especially at this period of financial need of the state. He wondered why some financial institutions would deduct moneyfrom customers as taxes but failed to remit the state’s share of such deductions. Mr. Eneh commended the Internal Revenue Agency Electronic Based Approach in harmonizing revenue system in the state.
The Chairman of the State Internal Revenue Services, Mr.EmekaOdo said that the establishment had perfected plans on tax payers automation system which would determine the number of tax payers in the area. The Committee also visited the State Economic Planning Commission to ascertain road map in tackling economic recession in the state.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Mr. Dan Onyishi said the commission was on top of the situation. Mr. Onyishi called on the people of the state to cue into various state and federal governments’ interventions to better their lot.
