FULFILL YOUR CAMPAIGN PROMISES GOV. UGWUANYI TELLS NEWLY SWORN IN LG CHAIRMEN
The Enugu State Governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has sworn-in the 17 Local Government Council Chairmen of the state.
Performing the ceremony at Michael Okpara Square Enugu, Governor Ugwuanyi charged the chairmen to carry out their duties with due diligence and a sense of responsibility to the people.
The Governor challenged the chairmen to fulfill their campaign promises and ensure that dividends of democracy got to the people at the grassroots.
“All campaign promises must be fulfilled in full measure. Let me therefore re-emphasize that the day of visiting council chairmen and councilors are over. The Local Government as the nearest government to the greater majority of people unless as the elected leaders you wear the same shoes as the people you may not know where it hurts. You are elected irrespective of their political inclination or their choices at the polls,” he said.
Earlier while taking the oath of office the chairmen pledged to abide by the stipulation of the constitution.
Speaking on behalf of others the local government chairmen of Uzo0-Uwani Local Government Council, Mr Fidelis Ani assured the governor of their commitment in discharging their mandate.
“We are very much aware of the role of local government in a democratic set up and we promise you that we will champion that role to the brim.”
The event, which also witnessed the swearing-in of the Local Government Vice Chairmen, attracted Senators, House of Representatives members, stake holders in the state, families and well wishers.
The Local Government Chairmen were elected on November 4, 2017 following an election conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), in an election that was swept by candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Before the election, the chairmanship position was over a year occupied by transition committee chairmen appointed by Governor Ugwuanyi to man the activities at the local government areas.
In the mean time, the Speaker Enugu State House of Assembly, Chief Edward Ubosi, has called on the newly sworn-in Council Chairmen in the State to embark on programmes and projects that would address unemployment, insecurity and improve on rural infrastructure.
Chief Ubosi stated this while addressing newsmen in Enugu after the exercise performed by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
He congratulated the chairmen and assured them of the readiness of the lawmakers in providing enabling legislations that would encourage them actualize their electoral promises at that third tier of government.
Chief Ubosi commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for conducting a successful council poll in the state and urged the chairmen to drive home governor Ugwuanyi’s development agenda to the rural areas.
The Speaker also appealed to the residents of the state to continue to support the government at all levels to enable it to meet their expectations.
