CATHOLIC BISHOP CAUTIONS AGAINST WIN-AT-ALL-COST SYNDROME IN 2019 POLLS
The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, the Most Rev. Callistus Onaga has condemned exploitation of the vulnerable young persons during elections.
In an Independence message to Nigerians, Bishop Onaga expressed regret that some politicians dumped young persons after using them to cause electoral violence or shedding of the blood of innocent citizens in a bid to win elections.
“May the politicians always know that the life of every Nigerian is worth more than whatever political position they are occupying; it has been said in many forms let us have that conscience and please remember that God is watching us. Free and fair election is what we hope for,” Onaga said.
Bishop Onaga urged politicians to allow peoples’ voters card to be meaningful by ensuring that those cards counted in the polls.
The high priest called for improvement on the welfare of the workers and collaborative efforts of Nigerians in nipping corruption in the loud.
Similarly, the Chaplain of Our Lady Queen of Peace Apostolate Enugu, the Very Rev. Fr. Benjamin Ochiagha, called for formulation of policies that would favour all the sectors in the country.
Articulating his views on 58th independence anniversary of Nigeria, Fr. Ochiagha advocated collaborative efforts of all and sundry in ensuring socio-economic advancement of the country.
According to Fr. Ochiagha, “those in power should be selfless, be sacrificial and work together for common good so that everybody in Nigeria would come back to that glory with which Nigeria was known.”
Fr. Ochiagha warned against pointing false accusing fingers at people and involvement in acts capable of hindering progress of the nation.
While laying emphasis on improvement on the education sector, Fr. Ochiagha identified love and unity as the key virtues that would help everlasting peace prevail in Nigeria, urging the leaders to remain focused as they pilot the affairs of the nation.
