ANAMBRA ASSEMBLY MOVES AGAINST UNLICENSED SACHET WATER PRODUCERS

The Anambra State House of Assembly has appealed to the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC in the state to take appropriate measures towards checkmating the proliferation of unlicensed sachet water manufacturers in the state.

The House passed the resolution following a motion sponsored by the Chief Whip and member representing Dunukofia Constituency, Chief Lawrence Ezeudu during the plenary in Awka.

According to Chief Ezeudu, many people resort to intake of sachet water as a major source of drinking water owing to its availability without knowing that such water could be contaminated and manufactured by unlicensed manufacturers in an unhygienic environment.

He said several lives were lost on daily basis as a result of water-borne diseases including cholera, dysentery and typhoid fever.

Supporting the motion, Dr. Timothy Ifedioranna, representing Njikoka 1, Constituency stressed the need for NAFDAC not to just issue NAFDAC number to water manufacturers but to also make routine visits to them with a view to safeguarding the health of the people of the State.

Also, the member representing Ogbaru II Constituency, Mr. Somtochkwu Udeze advised Ministry of Environment to direct its Sanitary Officers to monitor environments where sachet water were produced to ensure they met health standards for consumption.

The Deputy Speaker, Mr. Harford Oseke, who presided over the plenary read the resolution of the House and adjourned plenary until Tuesday.
