WAEC LIFTS BAN ON EBONYI SEC SCHOOLS—COMMISSIONER

REPORTER: AMECHI ODO

West African Examination Council (WAEC) has vacated the de-recognition order placed on public and private secondary schools in Ebonyi State for alleged malpractice during the Senior School Certificate Examination held in 2022.

The State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Sunday Nwangele, made this known while briefing journalists in Abakaliki.

He explained that the vacation of the de-recognition followed the payment of N50,000,000.00 fine and approval of a request by the State Government for the council to wave a balance of N48,000,000.00 levied on government owned secondary schools for their involvement in the malpractice.

Dr. Nwangele explained that N500,000.00 placed on 147 private and mission secondary schools over the allegation had been reduced to N250,000.00, which would amount to N36.7 million when paid.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the registration of students for the May/June WAEC Examination was delayed following the controversy surrounding the fine imposed on the state as a result of the alleged malpractice.
