The South East Governors Forum wants the Federal Government to take urgent steps towards addressing the deplorable condition of Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu.

This was contained in a communiqué after a closed door meeting of the forum with members of the National assembly in the zone, the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo and Speakers of houses of assembly in the South East states.

While addressing journalists, the Chairman of the forum and Governor of Ebonyi state, Chief David Umahi said that the runway, terminal buildings and cargo shelter of the airport were in a sorry state.

Chief Umahi explained that the recent meeting of the South East governors with the President Muhammadu Buhari, afforded them the opportunity to present the deplorable state of infrastructure in the zone.

“Federal roads such as Enugu-Ninth Mile-Onitsha road, Enugu-Portharcourt road, Aba-IkotEkpene road, Okigwe-Owerri road, and Ninth Mile-Makurdi express road. The meeting called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps in repairing the roads, especially using this opportunity of the dry season,” he said.

He further said that the forum approved the collaboration of DFID in the south east economic summit to be held from eleventh to thirteenth of November this year.

“We approved the visit of Brenthrust Foundation of South Africa to South East from 6th to 11th of November, 2017 on economic mission to the South East. They will tour all the South-East states.”

The forum charged the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC to ensure that the November 18, gubernatorial election in Anambra held as scheduled.
