Governor Chukwuma Soludo has inaugurated a seven-man Land Recovery Committee for Onitsha, Nnewi, Idemili, and their environs.

Inaugurating the committee at an event that took place inside the conference hall of the Ministry of Lands, Awka, the Governor represented by the Commissioner for Lands, Prof. Offornze Amucheazi, (SAN), declared that his administration would not condone land grabbing or encroachments of any kind on government owned lands and property.

The Governor
mandated the committee to take record and recover all government owned lands and property within their terms of reference.

He assured the committee that his administration would avail them of all the necessary support and logistics as proper land management was critical to his administration’s vision of a prosperous, peaceful and liveable homeland for the people of Anambra State.

While calling for special attention to Onitsha and its environs, the Governor condemned the practice of development on roads, particularly in Trans Nkissi Layout, where buildings were being erected on government roads, thereby defacing the original master plan of the layout.

Recommendations on steps to be taken to stem the distortion of the master plan had been made in the gazetted white paper of the Land Reform Committee.

He promised that the government would commence implementation of the recommendations of the Land Reform Committee soon.

The committee, which is chaired by the traditional ruler of Uke, Igwe Charles Chuma Agbala, with Mr. Dan Nwankwo as Secretary, is among other things expected to identify all government owned lands and property in Nnewi, Onitsha, Idemili and their environs and advise the state government on the best means to recover them.

Speaking on behalf of the committee members, the committee Chairman, Igwe Agbala thanked the Governor for finding them worthy to serve and promised to carry out their assignment dutifully in strict compliance with the terms of reference.

The committee has two months to complete its task.
