SALARY/PENSION ARREARS: ABIA WORKERS BEGIN INDEFINITE STRIKE

REPORTER: LAWRENCE NWOKEDI

Workers in the Abia State Government employ are to commence an indefinite strike from Tuesday May 9, 2023 as a result of non-payment of their salaries and arrears of pensions to pensioners.

Speaking with newsmen in Umuahia the Chairman Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Abia State chapter, Comrade Paschal Nweke, said the Union decided to embark on the strike following government failure to meet up with their demands.

He pointed out that the Labour had in the last few months had a dialogue with the state government over the arrears of salaries owed workers but all the efforts proved abortive as government could comply with the agreement reached in their meetings.

Comrade Nweke stated that the strike would only be called off when government complied with their demands.

He directed workers to stay away from offices, noting that a task force would be constituted to monitor compliance.

Radio Nigeria gathered that workers in Abia State Ministries, Departments and Agencies are owed various months of salaries as well as pensions for the pensioners.
