SAFETY VIOLATION: FRSC IMPOUNDED 13,208 VEHICLES IN ANAMBRA STATE IN 2019

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says It has intensified effort to reduce the rate of road accidents in the country in 2020.

The Sector Commander of the Corps in Anambra state, Mr. Ayodele Kumapayi, made the comment in Awka while briefing journalists on the activities of the Command in 2019. 

Mr. Kumapayi noted that the Corps already had embarked on more public enlightenment to ensure that motorists and other road users imbibed the right road safety habit.

The Sector Commander, who recounted that the Corps in 2019 visited about 400 worship centres, 680 parks, 71 schools (both primary and secondary), 543 markets, as well as conducted 77 road shows and 17 town hall meetings, said that the aim of increasing the sensitization was to further deepen the spread of road safety information in the state .

Mr. Kumapayi noted that the major traffic offences committed by motorists in the state in 2019 were seat-belt violation and failure to install speed limiting device. 

The FRSC boss in the state noted that in 2018 9,665 vehicles were impounded while13,208 vehicles were confiscated in 2019, which he said was a significant increase in the number of traffic offenders from the previous year.

He noted that between 15th December, 2019 and 6th January, 2020, two persons were killed and 40 others injured of which 13 persons were still in critical health conditions and two with minor injuries.

Mr. Kumapayi expressed appreciation for support of sister agencies in the state, including the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), OCHA brigade and ATMA.

The sector commander also commended the Anambra State Governor,  Chief Willie Obiano, for his support to FRSC by donating four vehicles to the corpses in order to make their operations in the state easy.
