RECURRING ACCIDENTS: ROAD USERS DEMAND CONSTRUCTION OF PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE AT REGINA CAELI JUNCTION, AWKA

Road users in Awka have renewed their call on the Anambra State Government to construct a pedestrian bridge at Regina Caeli Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

The call followed a multiple accidents that occurred at the junction on Sunday, which left some persons injured.

According to eyewitnesses, a driver, who was on high speed from Aroma Junction hit a Toyota Venza and 2 other vehicles, eventually drove away from the scene.

They narrated that after hitting the first car, the second driver who was trying to dodge him also rammed into another Mercedes Benz jeep.

The driver of the Mercedes Jeep and some members of his family fell into the drainage channel that demarcated the dual carriage of the road while some of the children sustained various degrees of injury.

Some of the sympathizers who did not mention their names said it had become imperative for government to consider the construction of a pedestrian bridge at the junction as the speed breakers earlier installed did not reduce the rate of accident on the ever-busy junction.

According to report, those injured were rushed to hospital while men of the Federal Road Safety Commission at the scene of the accident ensured free flow of traffic.

The Sector Commander of the Commission in Anambra State, Mr. Sunday Ajayi while confirming that no life was lost in the incident, advised drivers to consider other road users by reducing their speed on the highway.
