The Anambra State Police Command says it has commenced investigations into the circumstances that led to the death of a 47 year old man, Chike Okoye, at Uruezealor Village, Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area.

The raided home of the deceased

This is even as the kindred of the deceased has urged the police and relevant agencies to fish out those behind Chike’s death with a view to ensuring that justice prevailed in the matter. The victim was said to have met his death following injuries he sustained when a combined security team raided his home at about 8pm on Thursday, July 23.

The crisis leading to Chike’s death started in 2019 when some groups allegedly entered the Uruezealor village land forcefully. Elder brother of the deceased, Mr. Kingsley Okoye, alleged that his death was due to severe injuries he sustained, when security agents came to their residence.

He urged the police to ensure that those responsible for the death of his brother were arrested and prosecuted. Wife of the deceased, Mrs. Ebele Okoye, who is nursing a 7 month old baby, said she was seeking for justice over the death of her husband.

The Chairman of Uruezealor Village, Ogidi, Mr. Benedict Obide, noted that the victim addressed the police a day before the ugly incident.

Reacting to the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Anambra State Command, Mr. Haruna Mohammed, acknowledged that police were on a lawful duty, alleging that the victim, while evading arrest, jumped over a fence and sustained injuries.

Mr. Mohammed announced that investigation had commenced into the matter. He said the police had brought the tensed situation in the area under control.
