PANDEMONIUM AS PDP FACTIONS CLASHED IN EBONYI

Reporter : AMECHI ODO

There was heavy shooting and pandemonium Monday February 1, 2021 at Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Secretariat in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State as supporters of Elder Fred Udeogu led State Caretaker Committee of the Party stormed the secretariat to takeover.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the move followed a court order obtained from a Federal High Court Abuja against the dissolved Chief Onyekachi Nwaebonyi led State Executive Committee of the party.

Investigations revealed that when supporters of Chief Nwaebonyi got wind of the presence of the other group, they mobilized to the secretariat prompting the police and other security agents to open fire to disperse the crowd and prevent a breakdown of law and order.

In a telephone interview, Chief Nwaebonyi described the attempted takeover as illegal as both factions had before now been warned by the police to distance themselves from the secretariat pending the determination of the suit.

However, the Publicity Secretary of the State Caretaker Committee of PDP, Mr. Silas Onu, explained that its supporters relied on a court order issued by a Federal High Court in Abuja and urged the police to facilitate its implementation.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Mrs. Loveth Oda, said she had not been briefed on the incident.
