OVER 1,000 CORPS MEMBERS IN ABIA STATE RECEIVE FREE GENOTYPE TEST

National Youth Service Corps members have been told to join in the fight against sickle cell anemia in the country.

The Wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs. NkechiIkpeazu gave the charge during the campaign on the fight against sickle cell at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area.

The Chief Medical Director, Sickle Cell Care and Diagnostics Centre Umuahia, Dr ChukwuemekaNwakanma while describing sickle cell as an inherited blood disease noted that over 200 children die yearly from the ailment due to inability of some couples to ascertain their genotype.

He urged corps members to ensure that they knew their genotype before going into marriage.

Earlier, the State Coordinator, NYSC, Abia State, Mrs. Francesca Ifon noted that the visit would afford the corps members the opportunity to become vanguards in fight to eradicate sick cell disease in the country.

Highpoint of the visit was free genotype test to over one thousand corps members in the camp by medical experts.
