ISIEC PROPOSES MARCH 2022 FOR IMO LG ELECTION

REPORTER: CHINAZO ILECHUKWU

The Imo State Government says it has commenced preparations to return democracy to the third tier of government in the state.

The Chairman Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), Mrs. Pauline Onyeka, made this known during an interaction with journalists in Owerri.

She said the Commission would in March 2022 conduct elections for Chairmen and Councillorship positions in the 27 local government areas of the state and 305 INEC wards.

Mrs. Onyeka gave an assurance that the Commission would conduct free, fair and credible elections.

She noted that ISIEC had no impediment to conduct the polls and appealed to political parties and other stakeholders in the election to abide by the rules.

The Secretary Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Imo State, Mr. Clinton Edoziem, said election into the local government system was long overdue and called on the Commission to remain transparent in its conduct.

Local government election was conducted last in Imo State in 2018 but the chairmen and councilors had their tenures truncated in 2019 following a resolution of the State House of Assembly.
