FRSC TO UPGRADE ITS ACADEMY TO DEGREE AWARDING INSTITUTION, PLANS TO SACK UNFIT PERSONNEL

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), says it will soon upgrade its academy to a degree awarding institution. The Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, announced this when he declared open a two week course for Assistant Corps Commanders (ACC) seeking to be promoted to the rank of Deputy Corps Commanders (DCC), at the FRSC Academy Udi, Enugu States.

Dr. Oyeyemi, who stated that two more institutions would be situated in the Academy, appealed to the Enugu State Government to provide fifteen hectares of land to accommodate its expansion plans.

“We are going to commence our post graduate programme in transport related courses and also masters, and we have fulfilled all the requirements, what remains is to put the administrative block, which is scheduled for inauguration before the end of the month (March), into use.

“Then we have the Command and Staff College situated here too and that is for our personnel’ human power capacity building. “And the last one is the African regional Centre for excellence, which we are working with African Development Bank. Nigeria is among the three countries that were designed to be a regional center, the other two countries are Cameroon and Tanzania.

“So at the end of the day, this place is going to be a very big institution. Then we have already asked Enugu State Government to provide us another fifteen hectares of land; we are already on thirty-five hectares, you can see now if care is not taken congestion will now come and the Governor is aware of it because when all these funding come in, we need to put in more structures,” Oyeyemi pleaded.

Dr. Oyeyemi also said that any officer who failed fitness test would be shown the way out.

“It is a given in military and paramilitary that if you are not fit you cannot be in the system. You cannot be using clutches to work in a uniform organization or be limping; a level of physical fitness is required for you to do this job. For example if you go on patrol, if you’re not fit you cannot be on the patrol, it is one of the critical guidelines. So there is no going back on this, you cannot reverse such policy,” the Corps Marshal insisted.

The FRSC boss also cautioned officers and men of the organisation against indiscipline, threatening to deal with those found culpable. He said that the corps would improve on its safety operations, as there had been about four percent increase in road crashes when compared to the first quarter of last year.

“I have raised alarm, one we have experienced an increase in road traffic crashes and fatalities. The roads are getting better, we are battling with the issue of speed now more than ever before.

The level of crashes is increasing; I must be frank with you compared to last year. So it behoves on us to put in counter measures. Those are part of things we are going to discuss here to guide them.

“We need for logistics too: we need more vehicles, more bikes, we need more reader guns. That is why  we have commenced on the full enforcement of the speed limiting device for  for commercial vehicles,” Oyeyemi pleaded. Meanwhile three hundred and sixty-two Assistant Corps Commanders are participating in the two-week promotion course.
