Federal Government urged to declare a state of emergence on Lassa fever.

1452419493_316_lassa+fever+ratWith the rapid spread of Lassa Fever in more than seventeen states across the federation, residents of Enugu Metropolis have called on the federal government to declare a state of emergency on the disease.

they made the call while speaking with our correspondent on special assignment, Vitalis Echeozo who reports that the level of awareness of the people about Lassa Fever is still very low.

High level of personal hygiene and strong infection control practices had also been advocated as fundamental proactive measures in preventing the spread of Lassa Fever.

The Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) , Enugu State council, Doctor George Ugwu stated this at a news conference in Enugu.

Doctor Ugwu observed that precautionary measures employed during the outbreak of Ebola virus disease should be sustained in order to check the spread of Lassa fever virus.

He urged the state government to adequately equip tertiary health facilities in the area to guarantee proper management of the virus if detected in the state.

While calling for collaborative efforts in the sensitization of the public on the dangers of the virus, Doctor Ugwu urged the government to take proactive steps to prevent the outbreak of the disease in the state.
