ENUGU STATE GOVT EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER FLOOD AND GULLY EROSION IN THE AREA

Research has shown that Enugu State is prone to gully erosion and flood disaster possibly because of its topography and other environmental factors.

It was observed that flood and gully erosion already wreaked havoc in many communities, rendering people homeless and causing deaths in some cases.

Some of the worst hit areas include Ugwu Oye, Alu-Udele and Onu Iyi all in Nsukka town. Others are Udi, Ezeagu and some areas within the metropolis.

Also, some roads in Enugu metropolis and environs are on the verge of being cut off by erosion.

Some of the areas like Ugwu Onyeama along Ninth Mile road, a road within Eighty-two Division Nigerian Army Enugu and some parts of Udi Siding have almost been cut off by erosion.

In line with this development, the Enugu State Government has expressed worry over the spate of flood and gully erosion ravaging some parts of the State. The State Coordinator, Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP, Mr. Ikechukwu Obetta expressed the worry while inspecting areas ravaged by flood in some parts of the State.

Mr. Obetta expressed concern over the development and assured the people that the State Government was on top the situation. He pointed out that the Agency could not fold its arm and watch flood and erosion sack people from their homes. He appealed to residents to imbibe best environmental practices.

He explained that the Agency had commenced intervention in some gully erosion sites in the State.

The Project Engineer, NEWMAP, Mr. Festus Ajibo maintained that the core duty of agency was to reduce the vulnerability of erosion to the barest minimum. NEWMAP called on the people of the affected areas to be patient with the government as all hands were on deck to find lasting solution to the challenge.
