Reporter : AMECHI ODO

Ebonyi State Government has shut down nine Block Cement Factories and recovered thousands of blocks from building sites within Abakaliki for falling short of quality standard and control of its building codes.

In an interview with Radio Nigeria in Abakaliki, the Chairman of Abakaliki Capital Territory Development Board, Dr. Uche Onwe, explained that the State Government embarked on the enforcement to prevent another building collapse in the state. He noted that the government had given all block moulders in the state two weeks within which to register with Block Moulders Association of Nigeria to regulate their activities.

Dr. Onwe emphasised that the Agency would not hesitate to crush blocks that fail integrity test, noting that the recent collapse of three storey building in the capital city was an embarrassment, which the government would not allow to recur.
