ASUU THREATENS STRIKE, DEMANDS TALKS FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF 2009 AGREEMENT

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has appealed to stakeholders in the education sector to prevail on the Federal Government to recommence the renegotiation process on the 2009 FGN – ASUU agreement.

The Zonal Coordinator, ASUU Owerri Zone, Comrade Uzo Onyebinama, made the appeal at a news briefing in Awka, Anambra State.

He alleged that the renegotiation, which started behind schedule in 2017, broke down since May, 2018.

Comrade Onyebinama called on the Federal Government to reconstitute the Government Team to avoid scuttling the renegotiation and gains of the previous agreements.

He disagreed with the suggestions made by the government team in favour of introducing an Education Bank and Student’s Loan Scheme, describing the proposal as attempt to commercialize public universities.

Comrade Onyebinama also urged the Federal Government to compel state governments to fund their universities adequately and to stop undue interference in the administration of the institutions.

The ASUU Owerri Zonal Coordinator said the implementation of the components of the 2009 agreement would save the university system any form of industrial disharmony.
