GLOBAL COMMUNITY MARKS WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY

Today is observed in the global community as World No Tobacco Day.

World Health Organization, WHO set aside thirty-first of May annually to highlight the health and other risks associated with tobacco use and advocate effective policies to reduce its consumption.

Speaking on the significance of the day, the Deputy Director, Medical Laboratory Services, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, Comrade James Aneke advised those who indulge in tobacco smoking to find an alternative source of satisfying their appetite because of its health implications.

Comrade Aneke urged non-smokers to avoid exposing themselves to puffs from smokers as they would be vulnerable as the smokers.

The theme of this year’s awareness campaign, “Tobacco and Heart Disease” aims to highlight the link between tobacco products and heart and other cardiovascular diseases including stroke, which according to WHO is the leading cause of death worldwide.
