RESPECT FOR FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS IN FOCUS AS THE WORLD MARKS UNITED NATIONS DAY
The Day marks the adoption of the UN Charter in 1945 as with the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.
Since then, the United nations through its organs and agencies such as UNICEF, WHO and International Labour Organizations has continued to promote peaceful co-existence among membernations .
It does this is various ways especially by setting standards as seen in international labour laws and grants to countries hit by disasters.
Speaking on this year’s UN’s Day, the Chief of UNICEF, Enugu Field Office, Dr. Ibrahim Conteh urges humanity to uphold the sanctity of human life and work towards the eradication of poverty and conflicts in the world.
DrConteh explained that the world would be better place if justices, fairness, love and commonsense prevailed in all situations.
On how effective he thinks the United Nations has been in upholding it’s mandate, the Chairman Trade Union Congress, Enugu State Chapter, Comrade Chukwuma Igbokwe observes that the UN, through its agency, the International LabourOrganizations, ILO, has set the standard for best labour practices.
In another view, the President, Ohaneze Ndigbo Enugu State, Chief Chiedozie Ogbonnaya, advocated that diplomacy, rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights which the UN propagates should be embraced by countries of the world.
United Nations which began with fifty countries, today has
one hundred and ninety-three member States.
