LEGAL PRACTITIONERS ADVOCATE REVIEW OF THE PROCEDURE FOR APPOINTMENT OF JUDGES

Some leaders of thought in the South East have advocated a thorough review of appointment of judges as a way of strengthening the Independence of the judiciary and deepening the country’s democracy.

They made the call on ‘Political Watch’, a Radio Nigeria Enugu Zonal Network programme while discussing the topic “The Judiciary and Post 2019 Election Matters.”

One of them, a political scientist, Professor Gab Agu stated that judicial officers needed absolute freedom and atmosphere devoid of pressure from politicians and influential people to enable them to perform their constitutional roles creditably.

A former legislator in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr. Nwabueze Ugwu, said corruption that had permeated all sectors of the nation was also affecting the judiciary.

He noted that review of the process of appointment of judicial officials would make administration of justice in the country efficient and credible.

A former commissioner in Enugu State, Mr. Godwin Ogenyi said the country should start grooming its leaders early by providing leadership training to young people instead of appointing leaders on the basis of what he described as opportunity.

Some callers in the programme said support for the judiciary would enable it to render effective services to the people.
