I’m fit now to discharge my presidential duties says Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday returned to Nigeria after a 14-day vacation in the United Kingdom where he also treated his ear infection.
The president and his entourage landed at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja about 5.30pm to the warm embrace of some senior Presidency officials, service chiefs and cabinet members.
Buhari was also received by the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, and a few federal lawmakers.
The brief arrival ceremonies for the President included his inspection of a guard of honour mounted by officers and men of the Brigade of Guards, Abuja, the special army unit detailed to protect the Nigerian president.
Entertaining questions from journalists who asked after his health, Buhari replied: “You saw me when I was going and you saw me when I came back, you can access the situation yourself. I’m ok, you have seen me inspecting the guards of honour.”
Responding thereafter to a question asked him in Hausa language about how he was feeling, the President in a jocular response to the journalist said: “Do you want to wrestle me? You can see I am taller than you.”
Before the presidential motorcade left the airport for Aso Rock Villa, Buhar’s Spokesman, Femi Adesina, reiterated his earlier position in a press interview that the President did not go on medical vacation but merely followed the piece of advice of his Nigerian physician to see an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) medical specialist while vacationing in London.
Adesina further confirmed that Buhari would resume official duties at the Villa on Monday.
Buhari initially went on a 10-day vacation but it was extended for another five days to have him rest for a few more days before resuming for work.
Also speaking to journalists, the Zamfara State governor said, “it is a good thing that the President went on break and returned to meet his people hale and hearty”.
This is Buhari’s second vacation since he assumed office as President on May 29, 2015, having spent his first vacation from February 5th – 10th 2016, also in London.
