CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY CELEBRATES ASCENSION DAY

Today is observed as Ascension Day among Christian Community around the world.

The Day commemorates the day Jesus Christ ascended into heaven in the presence of his Apostles.

According to the Christian liturgical calendar, it falls on the fortieth day of Easter and is celebrated on the sixth Thursday of Easter.

Ascension Day which occurs ten days before Pentecost is a traditional Christian celebration.

It is a holiday in some countries and for Christian organizations, especially Catholics.

 Meanwhile, Nigerians irrespective of tribe and religion are advised to unite in building a virile nation.

The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Reverend Callistus Onaga gave the advice in Enugu while speaking on the essence of global feast of Ascension.

According to him, the ascension of Christ into Heaven denotes that by ascending into his glory, Lord Jesus Christ completed the work of man’s redemption.

Bishop Onaga said the memorable feast signified that Christ was raised by his own powers.

The Bishop decried incessant killings of innocent citizens and increasing rate of crime in the country.

He urged all and sundry to collaborate in transformation of the society.
