Poetry has been described as a tool for promoting positive change and preserving cultural heritage.
Some lovers of literature made the assertion during theatre performance of a poetry, “Dike Chukwumerije’s one hundred and two years in one hundred and twenty minutes ‘’which took place at Oaklands Park Enugu. The Theatre performance was described by those who gathered to listen and watch as historic and full of excitement as it did not give room for any dull moment.
It featured poetry reading, music, dance, comedy, drama and motivational speeches that tried to leave the audience with thoughts and important lessons on pre-colonial and contemporary issues in the nation’s history. One of the poetry reading was on piece entitled “ The Nigeria of our Dream”.
‘’It is because the land is lush, it yields it’s wealth to those who touch its heart with love and discipline. That’s why our flag is green. Because we see the eagle rise above the dark and stormy sky, it stands to remind us of the benefit of standing tall.’’
The Facilitator of the event and Poet, Mr. Dike Chukuwmerije who featured prominently in all the performances on stage explained that his aim of using poetry in an interesting manner to engage people on history of Nigeria was to actualize the dream of the founding fathers.
‘’Yes I know we have a torturous history, but the people that put Nigeria together they had ideal. They believed in something and I think we should try and strive towards that vision and ideal.’’
Mr. Chukwumerije assured the people that efforts were being made to ensure that poetry culture was not only built but sustained in the South East.
In an interview, the Zonal Director , Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria Enugu National Station, Mr. Ike Okere noted that the stage performance was an indication that whatever originated from poetry could have enormous impact on people.
‘’Dike has demonstrated that poetry is not that dry academic exercise. That poetry is life, is what we can enjoy.’’
Three members of the audience, Chief Uche Anioke, Chief Simon Okereke and Miss. Somma Nwokemba said the event was interesting and educating.
The event was attended by large number of people.
