EBONYI STATE GOVT PROVIDES RELIEF MATERIALS TO VICTIMS OF COMMUNAL CLASH IN AFIKPO SOUTH L.G.A.

EBONYI+STATE+MAPEbonyi State Government distributed relief items worth over ₦19,000,000.00 (nineteen million naira) to 121 households affected by recent intra-communal crisis in Ogiri community in Afikpo South Local Government Area.

At the event at Government House, Abakaliki, the Deputy Governor of the State, Dr. Kelechi Igwe tasked traditional rulers and town union presidents in the state to take up their responsibilities of ensuring Peace in their domain or face the consequences.

Items distributed to the households covering about two thousand persons included bags of rice, mattress, cartons of nodules and one hundred thousand naira each.

In the incident, which took place on 10th June this year, Ogiri Community was completely razed by their neighbours from Okporojo following an alleged killing of one Emeagha Oduko on a disputed rice farmland.

Dr. Igwe explained that the materials were in keeping with the promise made by the State Governor when he visited the Community but he emphasized that it marked the end of government’s humanitarian intervention in intra communal crisis.

The Chairman of Afikpo South Local Government Area, Mr. Eniuduma Chima, said the Council was working with other Stakeholders to ensure that the victims resumed normal life while efforts were on to provide them with shelter.

One of the community leaders, Mr. Emmanual Nkama and a victim, Mrs. Justina Arukwe said they had been finding it difficult to cope since the incident occurred and expressed appreciation to the State Government for its gesture.

They however appealed to the State Government to assist them with farm inputs to enable them to participate in this year’s farming season.
