VIGILANTEES ARREST TWO SUSPECTED BILL BOARD VANDALS IN ANAMBRA
REPORTER: UCHE NDEKE
Two middle-aged men have been arrested by members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG), Umuzocha Awka Unit, for allegedly destroying and stealing billboards belonging to the Anambra State Signage and Advertisment Agency (ANSAA).
Parading the suspects, Chukwuemelie Onyejiaka and Chukwuebuka Nwigwe, at ANSAA office in Awka, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Paul Nwosu, noted that the crime had been a reoccurring decimal.
The Commissioner expressed regret that the recurrent crime portrayed Anambra State as unsuitable for outdoor advertising, thereby denying government revenues needed for development.
He commended the Umuzocha Security outfit for being vigilant and helping to make the arrest, reminding others with such evil intent that there would be consequence for such criminal act.
Mr. Nwosu noted that the suspects would be handed over to the Police for prosecution.
According to reports, the suspects, Chukwuemelie Onyejiaka and Chukwuebuka Nwigwe, were arrested around 1am on Tuesday, near Regina Caeli Junction of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
Meanwhile, the suspects denied their involvement in destroying and stealing billboards as one of them, Chukwuebuka Nwigwe from Ebonyi State, said he was arrested at the crime scene while passing by around 1am.
His colleague, Chukwuemelie Onyejiaka; from Awka, said he was only helping Chukwuebuka get abandoned tarpaulin with which to repair leaking apartment.
Radio Nigeria gathered that the suspects would be handed over to the Police for further investigation and prosecution.
