SCH CHILDREN SHOULD LEARN THE CULTURE OF SAVING — NDIC INSISTS

Young people have been advised to cultivate the culture of saving to build a better future for themselves.
An official of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) Mr. Abdullahi Ubam, gave the advice in Enugu, during a savings and budget training at Government Technical College, Enugu, to commemorate the “2023 World Saving Day.”
The Day is created to increase public awareness of the importance of savings both for modern economies and for individuals alike.
NDIC trained about 200 students while commemorating the “2023 World Saving Day” with the theme: “Conquer Your Tomorrow Through Savings.”
Speaking at the event, the NDIC Coordinator of the programme, Mr. Ubam, said the programme was part of government’s initiatives towards encouraging financial savings among students, stressing that it was easier to catch them young.
He explained that NDIC used the celebration to sensitise students in
secondary schools on the culture of savings, financial management and investment as well as budgeting.
“For this reason, we are training 200 students from Government Technical College, Enugu to prepare for future through savings and budgeting,” he said.
Also the NDIC Bank Examiner, Enugu Zonal Office, Mr. Oyim Elechi, said that tomorrow was filled with uncertainties, adding that saving for tomorrow would help to overcome challenges that would come.
“You can save using saving boxes, opening accounts with the financial institutions, creating money market accounts, online savings accounts, credit unions and automatic savings plans.
“This will help you build a good saving habits and spend your money on needs rather than wants,” he said.
The Director, Schools Department, Ministry of Education, Enugu, Mrs. Francisca Nwokolo, while commending NDIC for organising the training, said when the students acquire such knowledge, it would help them to be focus in life, especially on financial related matters.
Nwokolo also appealed Federal Government to extend the training to all the secondary schools in the country, explaining that it would help to catch them young.
“The students need the experience regarding saving and the difference between needs and wants, so that it can reflect in their lives,” she said.
Welcoming NDIC earlier, the Principal of the college, Mr. Christopher Isiefe, described the training as wonderful, stressing that every person should save for future.
While commending NDIC, the principal advised the students not to be wasteful in life but to save little they had and take the training seriously.
A student, Chijoke Nwodu from Electrical Department of the college said he was impressed with training, saying had undersood the importance of savings.
