WIFE OF ABIA GOV CANVASSES PROTECTION OF GIRL CHILD FROM ABUSE

The wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscillia Otti, says concerted effort from government and various stakeholders should be put in place to ensure the protection of the girl child from sexual abuse and domestic violence in the society.
Mrs. Otti stated this at the 2023 International Day of the Girl Child held in Umuahia, the Abia State capital with the theme: “Invest in Girls Rights: Our leadership and well being.”
Mrs. Otti noted that there is the need to entrench the girl child rights in the society in order to nurture and sustain important institution that could guarantee the rights of girls.
She called for the promotion the girl child as a change agent, investing and protecting them from all forms of abuses.
Earlier, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, stated that the objective of the day was to unite adolescent girls and to ensure that they deserved the right to safe environment, quality education and healthy life.
She urged young girls between 9 and 14 years to go for for Human Papilloma virus vaccine for the prevention of cervical cancer as approved by Federal Government and thw World Health Organization.
Highlights of the event were drama, quiz and cultural dance displays by various school children drawn from the 17 local government areas of the state.
