PROTEST: IMO WORKERS TELL FG TO FIX REFINARIES

REPORTER: CHINAZO ILECHUKWU

The organized labour in Imo State have called on the Federal Government to fix refineries in the country to help check the increasing prices of petroleum products.

Addressing journalists during a rally in Owerri, the factional Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, Comrade Philip Nwansi, said the policy had brought untold hardship, especially to workers as prices of goods and services had skyrocketed.

He called on the Federal Government to take urgent measures towards ameliorating the sufferings of the people, insisting that the measures taken so far were not enough.

Comrade Nwansi, however, expressed gratitude to Governor Hope Uzodimma for rolling out palliatives, including increase in workers’ salaries to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal.

He called on workers to reciprocate the gesture by discharging their duties with diligence.

The immediate past Chairman of the NLC in Imo State, Mr. Austin Chilakpu, called on states to emulate the Imo State Government for being proactive in checking the effects of the subsidy removal.

Mr. Chilakpu, who is the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, identified raising minimum wage of workers to forty thousand naira, introduction of free transportation, free meals and support to agriculture as interventions by Governor Uzodimma.

He claimed that the state has performed beyond the expectations of workers.
