REPORTER: AMECHI ODO
As 2023 general election draws nearer, the Acting Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs. Christy Uba, has warned serving corps members not to meddle in the local politics of their host communities.
She gave the warning in a message to the closing of Orientation course for 2022 Batch C, Stream 2 Corps members at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Old Macgregor College, Afikpo in Ebonyi State.
Represented by the State Coordinator of the Scheme, Mrs. Bamai Mercy, the Acting Director General charged the corps members to be guided by the provisions of the NYSC Act and Bye-Laws as well as workplace rules and regulations.
She noted that in keeping with the objectives of the scheme, they were expected to integrate into their host communities while also appreciating and respecting their cultures.
“You must desist from meddling in their local politics. Furthermore, I enjoin you to undertake personal and group Community Development Service projects that will help to uplift the living standard of the people of your host communities,” she directed.
Mrs. Uba said the management of NYSC was exploring more avenues to optimize the benefits of SAED programmes towards making corps members self reliant, emphasising that it was interfacing with commercial banks on how to provide start up loans to successful Corps members.
“On our part, we are liaising with financial institutions and other stakeholders with a view to providing start-up loans to enable you actualize your business dreams,” she stated.
The Acting Director General noted that the Management of the scheme remained committed towards making adequate provisions for the welfare and security of corps members.
According to Mrs. Uba, the management is in constant liaison with security agencies and other critical stakeholders with a view to ensuring their safety as well as addressing other essential needs for a fulfilled service year.
Radio Nigeria gathered that 869 corps members participated in the three weeks Orientation course.
