PROTECT OUR FACILITIES & OFFICIALS FROM ATTACKS— INEC BEGS ANAMBRA PGs
REPORTER: KEVIN EKEDIEGWU
INEC has challenged Presidents-General of communities in Anambra State to protect the commission’s offices, materials and officials against hoodlums as the 2023 general election draw nearer.
The State INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Elizabeth Agwu, gave the task during the meeting with Presidents-General of communities in Anambra Central zone held in Awka, the state capital.
She advised the traditional rulers and the Presidents-General to set up a security committee to secure the commission’s human and material assets.
The REC expressed dissatisfaction with the non-challant attitude of the people of the state towards collecting their PVCs.
Dr. Agwu urged the Presidents-General to sensitize members of their communities to the need to go and collect their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) to enable them to participate actively in the forthcoming polls in the state.
She maintained that votes must count in the 2023 general election, stressing that INEC was committed towards ensuring that the elections were free, fair and credible.
In a remark, the traditional ruler of Okpuno, Igwe Sunday Okafor, claimed that people from neighbouring states were their problems as they kept terrorizing the state.
Igwe Okafor, who explained that his community arrested 13 suspected hoodlums terrorizing the area, urged the Presidents-General to enhance their capabilities in safeguarding their areas.
The Chairman of the Presidents-General of Anambra Central zone, Mr. Ikechukwu Ofokansi, assured the REC that his colleagues were equal to the task of safeguarding the Commission’s materials and officials.
