ELIGIBLE VOTERS THRONG INEC OFFICES IN ABIA AS COMMISSION DISPLAYS VOTERS REGISTER
REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU
The display of the voters register by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC), which commenced last Saturday nationwide is going on smoothly in Umuahia, Abia State.
A visit by Radio Nigeria to some of the centres where the exercise was going on revealed it had been a seamless process.
At the INEC office at Adelabu Street, Umuahia, it was observed that while the register was available for those who wanted to check their details, some people that came made inquiries about the availability of their Permanent Voters Cards, which they were yet to collect.
At School Road Primary School, Umuahia, and another centre at Isieke Ibeku, in Umuahia North Local Government Area, the situation was the same while those who had some complaints about their details, which were not correct were given forms to fill.
Some residents, including Mr. Prince Dike and Mr. Chidozie Allison-Ugwunna, said the exercise was important to avoid anything that would deprive eligible voters from exercising their franchise in 2023 general election.
They however advised that the permanent voters cards of those who were yet to collect them be made available early enough to enable those concerned to get the card.
In an interview, the Head of Voter Education and Publicity Department, INEC, State Office, Abia State, Mrs. Rebecca Jim, said the essence of the exercise was to among other things, ensure that the details of all registered Nigerians were correct, and to quickly make corrections where errors were spotted.
She also explained that the display was to give those who had undisputable evidence that the name of a deceased person was on the list, to report such to the Commission.
