FRSC LAUNCHES EMBER MONTH CAMPAIGN IN EBONYI

The Acting Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Dauda Biu, has called for the collaboration of critical stakeholders to ensure that road crashes are further reduced by 15% in the country.

He stated this in a message to the launch of Ember month road safety campaign at Spera N Deo Park, Abakaliki in Ebonyi State.

Represented by the Corps Commanding Officer incharge of Enugu Zone, Mr. Ocheja Ameh, the Acting Corps Marshal, explained that the Corps was running out of excuses to guarantee hope instead of apprehension in the use of roads.

Mr. Biu therefore directed that Mobile Court sitting be conducted throughout the festive period as the Corps would pay attention to effective traffic control, failure to install speed limiting device by commercial vehicles as well as overloading.

The Sector Commander, Ebonyi State Sector Command, Mrs. Uche Chukwurah, attributed road crashes to over speeding, overloading and the use of substandard tyres, emphasising that the Corps had deployed 1,023 personnel in readiness for the ember months.

Governor David Umahi who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Dr. Steve Odo, described roads in the state as safe for motorists and called for the elimination of bureaucratic bottlenecks in the rescue and treatment of crash victims.

The Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers in Ebonyi State, Comrade Anthony Ewa said the Union was committed to regulating mthe operations of commercial drivers by ensuring that they obey traffic codes and adopt other road safety measures.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “avoid speeding, overloading and unsafe tyres to arrive alive.”
