GBV: ABIA STATE GOVT TO SET UP FAMILY COURT, SEXUAL ASSAULT REFERRAL CENTRE

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State says plans are underway to setup a family court in the state that will try cases involving family and Gender Base Violence (GBV).
Governor Ikpeazu made this known in a message to the “End GBV Summit” held in Umuahia.
The Governor, represented by the Attorney General of the state and commissioner for Justice, Mr. Uche Ihediwa, said that his administration would continue to support the fight against Gender Base Violence in the society.
He commended the office of the first lady of the state for its commitment in the struggle to end gender violence in the state
In her address, the wife of the Governor, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, said that a sexual assault referral center would soon be setup to help with medical care and evidence gathering in order to reduce the challenges Police investigators face in carrying out their investigations into the matter.
She called on the Ministry of Health, religious leaders, civil society organizations, the law enforcement agencies, community leaders and labour unions to join hands with government in the fight to end GBV in the society.
